Hi all this may be a building regulations question, but at what height/width should a handrail be fitted to a step? Cheers Dave

Hi Dave, Building Regs only apply to stairs within buildings and not to external steps. Could you clarify whether the step is inside or outside - you seem to suggest inside by mentioning the regs. Also, I think you are asking at what height of step(s) - one/two/three risers, etc. - is a handrail required? I don't think there's a prescriptive answer to this in the UK, but OSHA specifies four or more risers, though they don't specify the height of the risers... Good luck with this one. Alan

I've had a look through the Scottish Technical Handbook 2007 at it details the requirement of having a handrail where there is a change of level of more than 600mm, or where the flight on a ramp is longer than 2m. The height of the handrail should be at a fixed height of at least 840mm and not more than 1m, measured vertically above the pitch of a flight on a stair or ramp and on a landing where a handrail is provided. Not sure if this has helped you.
