Hi Folks, I have been asked to help with producing a Risk Assessment for unloading heavy steelwork from a lorry on site. They will be using a Telehandler for unloading, does anybody have a sample I could have a look at or even a template. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you're after a lifting plan, as opposed to only a risk assessment. Using your own risk assessment template look at L113 for more info.

Hi Unfortunately it’s not a case of a lifting plan. They are asking for information on the unloading specifically. We have fitted a trailer with an inertia reel and harness to eliminate falls if driver needs to gain access to the trailer. Basically this is an important customer so I don’t want to miss anything on this assessment.

This thread just shows how good this website really is. A question requesting some guidance and two excellent links appear in no time at all. Craig, all you have to do now (and I know that makes it sound simple) is look at the links and make the risk assessment your own. I'm sure you will be back on if more info is needed.Well done everyone.

Are you lifting materials using mechanical means? Sounds very much like a lifting plan to me. Definately not as complex as one for a tower or mobile crane, but a plan nonetheless. And in any case, if your client has asked you for an assessment and you come back with not only that but a proper plan as well - how good will you look?

As others allude here, the methods applied in loading the vehicle are important to how it is unloaded. Without knowing how the load is presented on arrival, you cannot begin to consider the safest way to unload. Beyond that, and more importantly, if this is a complex or unusual fabrication, then the designer of the piece will have considered how the item is to be lifted, transported and installed, and his considerations need to be included in your assessment deliberations. Otherwise CoG or instability issues may cause you to come a real cropper!
