Hello all, I work off shore Tunisia, I seem to be receiving a lot of safety alerts from all offshore sectors of the world, relating to hands and finger injuries, this is something I have been working on for quite a while on my unit, for example when landing loads we use tag line, boat hooks etc but I always still find people will put their hands in a position were they can be hurt, only last week I identified potential pinch point hazards when handling mud skips, on this occasion I used PowerPoint and photographs during a 30 minute safety meeting.
Awareness and training I feel is the key.

I would interested if any one similar experiences in coaching people on hands and finger safety.

Hi Mike,

I'm sure you will find that the type of injuries are pretty high with regards to your industry (certainly was when I was in it).

Apart from the obvious training/awareness etc a practical element I used to adopt was to have a volunteer to don welding gloves and tape them up, then ask them to do some simple tasks such as opening a tin of coke etc... then discuss as a group how simple tasks are so difficult without use of fingers.

Additionally it was always a mandatory subject in any toolbox talk pre tour meeting, pre task meeting etc and responsibility was given to the senior person (crane op) etc with ad hoc attendance to ensure it was given.

Strangely enough on 1 rig the OIM had most of lower part of fingers removed due to a previous crush injury... had a hard time with him (old school) to act as an ambassador of safe work, used to cringe at his acts!

Hope this helps too

Tony

Mike,

I worked offshore Tunisia for a year or so I am now in Brazil, I think you will find especially in the Oil and Gas Drilling that hand and finger injuries are one of our main injury statistics. Some drilling contractors have the hands of policy etc, we dont have that policy here but coach and mentor especially when it involves cargo movement and tubulars to use tag lines.

We use the WSM as the forum to educate the reason for use of tag lines. If you go to step cahnge you will find PPT presentations on hand finger injuries.

And I have seen the same as tony the old dinosours with fingers and toes missing.
