Just read an excellent article relating to dermatitis in the hairdressing industry (one of those SME areas of low hazards!)
Great reading if anyone has access to the BSC Safety Management magazine, certainly shows Chris as a very knowledgeable figure on plenty of these posts... Well done Chris!

Chris Packham's views are authorative and respected and his contributions to this Forum always most welcome. Worth bearing in mind that HSE have discreet 'industry' pages on their website for Hairdressing.

Thank you for these very nice comments. I really must get round to polishing my halo.
Seriously, though, hairdressing is arguably the worst possible profession for occupational contact dermatitis. One study suggested that around 4 out of 10 apprentices left in year one due to skin problems.
Because of its record in 2010 the EU funded a program (Safehair) to develop EU common guidelines on the reduction of skin problems in hairdressers. I was involved in this. In September in a meeting in Dresden we were able to agree a document outlining a common approach. This is available for download from the Internet. If anyone is interested contact me of the forum and I will give you the URL.
