Can anyone tell me what requirements exist covering works on the public highway and traffic control. In Chepstow near where I live there are traffic lights covering an area of about half a mile reducing the road to one lane. The work being done is cable pulling through ducting under the pavement. What is the requirement for closing off the road etc. Just interested in finding out nothing more.

I imagine the answer you are looking for will be found in Chapter 8 somewhere - you can download the details here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/tss/tsmanual/

Thanks Grim, quite a latge document so will have a look in detail and find out what I want to understand when I get a wek or two by the look of it. Seems to be longer reading than waiting in the traffic jam.

Bob, Have a look at the NRSWA [New Road and Street Works Act (Burgundy book)] - I think! The book defines situations for traffic management (road speed, cone size etc). Simon

Show me a piece of legislation that doesn't cure insomnia and I'll be amazed. If it's in a pdf format you should be able to search the document by keyword which might make life easier.

The maximum site length for using temporary traffic lights is 300m. Closing a road is carried out under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regualtions Act. If you ae concerned with the measures taken at the site report it to the Chepstow One-Stop-Shop or online through the Monmouthshire council website....
