We have a machine which is suitably guarded and meets the requirements of BSENISO 13857 - Safety of machinery: safe distances to prevent danger zones being reach.
However one employee is complaining that because of his small stature he is unable to operate the machine and has asked for a step to be provided to enable him to reach.
The problem is that if we provide a step then the taller operators would be able to defeat the guarding and reach the danger zone.
Can we put a height restriction for persons using this machine or would this open another can of worms?

Can you not provide this indvidual with a portable step that can be removed when he is not on-shift?
As for putting height restrictions in place, dodgy ground my friend!

We could provide a portable step but there's no guarantee that he will remove it at the end of each shift which means the management will have to check that it has been done each time.

Are you seriously trying to suggest that it would be better to get rid of people by introducing height restrictions rather than complying with a legislative duty to'manage the risk'?
