Hi The_Monck, I would take the general certificate if i were you it is always handy to have and seems to be the next step. you can take the course at your local collage. i am not sure of the prices they seem to vary from collage to collage. some seem to have funding and some don't it just depends on the area in which you live. the course is around two weeks long with exams at the end. good luck with the course. when i took mine it was not has bad as everyone made out. are yoou in health and safety at the moment. regards Darren

Hi Darren Many thanks for your reply, yes I'm in a H&S Role at the moment and the company are willing to pay for the course, but with so many courses around ie NEBOSH, NVQ route etc it was nice just to get a second opinion. Kind regards Paul

Before you embark on the NEBOSH NGC, I would agree that this is probably the next step, provided you don't work in construction. If your organisation is a construction company than maybe the Connstruction Certificate would be a better option. If it is a general health and safety you seek or you work in an office environment, manufacturing, retail etc the NGC is fine. Maybe others would disagree.

Agree with tonylundy I have passed both general and construction certificate and as Tony states depends what field you intend to practice in. Only reason I have both was down to redundancy needed to broaden my scope, now embarked on NVQ L4 should have carried on 6 years ago but got comfy in my position now finding everyone got grad / cmiosh status and this is required for the latest vacancies Good luck in what ever you decide but keep getting the qualifications Alan

Hi the Monck; I agree with the others that say yes depending upon your current employment. For what it is worth I too did the IOSH MS course then went on to do the Gen' Cert and then on to a BSc (Gen cert was a pre requisite of the BSc course). Be prepared to learn how read and write again though as NEBOSH require a 'special' way of wording your answers to their questions -IMHO of course!

Hi The_Monck, I took my General Certificate and also passed with credit, my wrists hurt after the two weeks and my brain was fried, however it was worth it and only heightened my thirst for more. I found it to be extremely worth while as an introduction to H & S but also recognised that further knowledge, competence and committment was needed to establish myself. I'm still learning and my passion for all things safe has not wained. Good luck to you. Tom

Hi The_Monck, maybe you should speak to a careers advisor. Why don’t you contact IOSH and get some free impartial advice? Good luck for the future.

I'm putting this up for quote of teh day! I couldn't agree more... That said once I finish the 'special' wording for my 8000 word assignment (that's only 4000 more that degree dissertation!!!) in the precise manner that NEBOSH like I will hopefully have a NEBOSH diploma. I started with NEBOSH cert and agree it's a very good stepping stone.
