Hi,
Can anyone advise please? We have a number of company cars that are owned by the company and it is written in our H&S Policy that all company vehicles will contain a first aid kit. It has been mentioned by one of our employees that fire extinguishers should also be fitted in company vehicles. Is there any truth to this??
Thanks

Hi
In my previous employment where we had a fleet of responsive repairs vans we did supply fiore extinguishers in the vehicles (on brackets so they couldn't fly about)...but really because of the materials and tools that were being carried. They were rarely discharged unless one of employees dealth with another vehicle fire as they were passing.

I personally have had a lease car where the leasing Co provided a fire extinguisher as part of the vehicle safety pack. However I am sure they are are not mandatory; surely provision would depend on risk assessment.

Hi CraigEls,
There is no legal requirement to provide a fire extinguisher in a company vehicle unless your risk assessment has deemed one to be necessary i.e. a company van that the operatives would have welding equipment in or flammable contents etc...
Hope this helps...

A good startiung point would be to check with your insurers as you would not want to install anything which may invalidate any vehicle insurance.

Craig,

I would suggest that if you do install fire extinguishers then you should ensure that everybody who uses those vehicles are trained in the use of the extinguishers.
This suggestion follows a very heated debate in an IOSHSE meeting talking about fire extinguishers in buildings where there were very varied opinions (even within the fire service/HSE) but one point was agreed and that was if they are there then people should be trained to use them.

Following the ADR regs (Carriage of Dangerous goods by road) - fire extinguishers installed in vehicle cabs are purely for fighting an engine fire. I would suggest the same if you install them in your fleet of cars.
