I am trying to get a position in a health and safety role and would like any advice from members of the forum as the best way to get started.
I have been working in the construction industry for many years as a Scaffolder and have had some experience working as a Health and Safety manager for a small scaffolding company based in Scotland.
I am a TECHIOSH MEMBER.

Hello georgehenry

You can start by sending your cv to agencys but these are very differcult times at present, especially in the construction sector.I have worked in construction for 12 years and have never known it like this and company iam working for at present are lucky to break even.Wanted to get into health and safety full time myself and done my NEBOSH last year and iam also TECHIOSH member but found jobs difficult to come by so i have just stayed at company that iam at present as iam site supervisor and do a lot of the health and safety side of it anyway. All i will say is stick to what you know best(scaffolding) because no qualification can beat experience of specific skill, especially in construction.(best of luck)

Fully agree with fitzy3, i have just gained my NEBOSH NGC1 and NCC1 and applied for TECHIOSH. I am going to carry on doing the work I do at present (Highway Engineer) and continue to check the market for vacancies in the H&S field, hopefully CDM. Good luck for the future.

Hi George

I was in manufacturing for 8 years in a health & safety role and was made redundant I then took my NEBOSH Construction after taking my NEBOSH general 5 years earlier, I then was lucky enough to land a role as a Health & Safety Manager in the construction industry were I have been for the last two years, I have started my NVQ L4 route to gain GRADIOSH status and then moving onto Chartered

The reason I mention all that is I have noticed to gain a Health & Safety role you need to be more and more qualified I stopped a number of years ago as I thought I was comfortable in my role working for a big company then redundancy happened so if you want a job going forward keep taking exams and get fully qualified but also the difficult bit for people not in the role is getting experience if you are in a position to gain experience and follow the NVQ L4 route I would recommend you do this immediately because I also believe the construction industry will become busy soon and those qualified will be in a position to start
