Hi All,

Im just looking for some advice really, and i apologise if this topic has been beaten to death, but would appreciate any input!

Im a 28 year old and will soon be graduating with a 4 year degree in Occupational Safety and health from an Institute of Technology in Ireland. The degree itself is recognised by IOSH. I have 6 months safety experience, and have previously worked in construction and manufacturing industries, as well as having a management role in the hospitality sector. What with the lack of options here at the moment, i am considering looking abroad, primarily USA, Canada or Australia, maybe even the middle east. How would my qualifications be viewed in such countries? I am concerned about the differences in the legislative frameworks, as i have mainly studied Ireland and UK safety law.

Has anyone here embarked on a similar journey perhaps, or have the same thoughts? Any idea on my chances for employment in safety in such countries, given the qualifications i have and experience? As i said, any comments appreciated!

Best Regards,

Dave.

Well done so far - Oz is, in my opinion, the best - I have lots of friends & family there - all are making a good living -

If U can get yourself over there [on a holiday even] and then market yourself as much as U can to as many as U can as Oz's like those who try - U can get in Oz that way as many of my F&F have done just that and some recently [last year] as well

Sidney is probably not very good but Perth is much better as are other places

Scour the Internet for info before U get there & set up your plan like a military exercise as U would be going there to get a job & new life not just for a holiday

There is lots of work - some of the biggest oil & gas fields in the world are present and yet hardly tapped

best of luck

Hey there Bob,

Thanks a lot for your input. I would probably be inclined to agree with you about Oz being the best option of the lot, from what i have seen about jobs available on the internet.

Have you any idea about the potential differences in the legislation between Oz and UK/IRE? Or any ideas about how to upskill ones knowledge on the Australian safety legisaltion?

Thanks again for your earlier comments, much appreciated, its great that these forums are here for guys like me that are new to health and safety to get advice from fellow profs!

Kind Regards,

-Dave

Hi Dave,

Each of the Australian States and the Commonwealth have enacted their own OHS legislation - so it varies somewhat depending on your location. In addition to this mining and offshore petroleum and gas have their own legislation. I think that you would find Australian safety legislation less prescriptive than in the UK. The States are in the process of trying to harmonise safety legislation between States.

I work in Western Australia and the economy is booming. There is considerable demand for OHS professionals, particularly in mining and gas. Salaries are excellent. A degree is desirable for upper management roles. I think that based on your qualifications etc, you would be very employable.

I suggest that the best way to get a handle on Australian safety legislation is to complete a OHS law unit at an Australian university (enrol on a single unit basis). Most Master courses have a law unit. I have electronic course notes from a postgraduate Masters course which provide a good summary of Australian OHS legislation. PM me if you would like a copy.

All the best.

Andrew
