What is the difference between a fireman's lift (sic) and a firefighting lift? Is there one or is it modern semantics?

Fireman's lift is when a firefighter lifts a person onto his shoulders and carries to safety. Firefighting lift is a lift that can be used by firefighters to access upper, or lower floors to enable them to reach a fire at a higher, or lower level in a building. Safety features built in.

A fireman's lift is a single lift (normally out of a bank of two or three lifts) that can be controlled normally with a key switch independently by firemen to either evacuate or to carry heavy equipment to the floor required, it will only be used if the fire service are confident that it is clear of the fire. A firefighting lift is a lift encased in its own sealed lift shaft, it has a separate and clean electricity supply and more fire protection in the shaft then a normal lift, therefore it could be used to fight a fire close to its location. The motor room for this lift is far more protected then a normal motor room would be. Sean

Sean, Firefighting Lifts are manufactired specifically for that purpose and should not be used for general transportation. The equipment installed must comply to BS EN81-73 this involves IP rated switchs, sump pump, escape ladders Etc.... As previousls stated a firemans lift is a lift in general use with a key switch facility for Firemans use in an alarm condition although in my experience rarely used by the fireservice. Hope this helps.
