I am in a bit of a quandary, recently in my workplace a cup of water was spilt on a desk, the water managed to find its way between a bank of desks and dripped directly onto the main electrical supply for all the computers and other electrical items, the whole area immediately went off as the fuse popped in the fuse box located near by.
No staff members were injured and they were all able to move to another bank of desks close by and resume working. We contacted the landlord and within 30minutes two electricians turned up to dry the area out and reset the fuse, this work involved completely removing the junction box to dry out the supply box completely before resetting the fuse.
It was close to my finish time and on the way into the men's toilet I noticed the electrical panel door open, inside the panel there is the fuse box, it has a lock on it which was open with the keys still hanging from the lock, I was shocked that the contractors could put themselves in such danger and closed the panel door, the only people they were putting in danger was themselves, I couldn't believe that they were working on an open electrical junction box and hadn't even locked the fuse box or the panel door leading to it, any member of staff could have reset the fuse and caused a fatal injury to either or both of the electrician's as they were drying it off at the time.
My problem is firstly apart from themselves they were not putting any of our staff in danger, but at the same time I am not sure if I should report them or not, I wouldn't want to see them losing their jobs, but I am still shocked that a basic SSOW was not been followed.
If you were in the same position what would you have done, and what action do you think I should take now?

Would you rather see someone lose their job or their life?
Is it any of your business anyway - of course it is as a duty of care to other employees.
I don't know what your position is in your organisation but you could always take up the issue with your boss who should then take it further.
Good to see the first safety device worked although it appears this has resulted in further safety problems. Isn't that just life at present?

My first action would have been to approach the contractors, explain my concerns and see if they had an answer to whether they could be harmed by someone else energising the system.
Fuses and fuse boxes vary a lot in design.
I would work on from there, dependent on their answer.

Thats a no brainer i woulndt like to see either happen.
They were not employed by "seans" company fortunately no one was hurt injured or killed.
My duty of care would end with
Back to the landlord with written concerns and let that be the end of it.
