Does anyone have any info how to apply to join? I was notified that end of January we could apply with £30.00 as a half price fee. Near the end of Jan now.

Why is it that I can set up [I have set up a number of businesses] almost any type of business I want to in the UK, inclusive of selling food to the public inclusive of children without any kind of proff indemnity insurance but H&S advisers have to have it?

Bob, if you wished to set up a business offering a professional service (architect, medic, law) and be accredited by the relevant professional body it would be a requirement that you have sufficient financial resources (PI insurance) to indemnify a wronged party in the event that you failed in your professional duty and caused harm. When operating a food supply business, whilst not a formal requirement, it is very strongly advisable to purchase sufficient public liability insurance to do the same. A professional approach to doing business, rather than the cowboy way. H&S advisers do not need to have PI insurance if they are employed. H&S consultants who do not wish to be part of any professional scheme also are not required to have it. Finally, if you were to ask how could most H&S consultants ever get it so wrong that they would be successfully sued for shedloads of cash I would not be able to provide an answer!

Very interesting article in SHP this month about this very topic. Well worth having a read and forming your own opinion.
