Hi all I'm new to this form. I am about to graduate with a HDip in Safety, Health & Welfare at Work, I have been looking at offshore work either in oil, gas or wind. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could break into this sector, green. I have over 10 years experience in the construction industry 7 of which were in the design and technical side. thanks in advance for any advice or guidance.

You might want to do a search for "offshore" through the discussion forum as this question comes up fairly frequently. From a H&S consultant working in the O&G sector and who travels offshore - you will need to have your medical and survival as well as Minimum Industry Standards Training (MIST) course - self funded more than likely, so likely to be about £1000 to cover the lot. The other option is to consider an onshore H&S position which would have the opportunity to travel offshore. H&S offshore jobs generally are offered by the Operators or Main Contractors - service company H&S personnel are unlikely to get much of an opportunity to go offshore due to the ever increasing demand on bed space aboard. There are quite a few H&S offshore jobs being advertised at the moment through the specialist industry website such as www.oilcareers.com - some of them are looking for experienced personnel but as a minimum they will expect all offshore certification to be in place. Not sure if this helps but is the realsitic answer! Best Wishes - Donna
