Does anyone have any ideas how to make H and S inductions more interesting ??
I require to carry them out sometimes a few times a day. I would ideally change this for a dvd, to ensure i am on the site but finances would not allow this in the current time.
Does anyone have ideas how to make them more interesting and interactive for the viewers ??

Colin, you refer to viewers from which I assume you are using a powerpoint slide show to deliver your mesage.
Perhaps ditch the powerpoint in favour of a personal delivery with props (PPE required?) and handouts and test. Also, doing this several times a day will inevitably make you (and therefore yoru audience) very jaded and bored. Can they not be done in a more time-efficient manner?

If you are doing your 9inductions with powerpoint, why don't you add your own video clips to the presentation. Take video clips of relevant parts of the workplace/equipment etc and attache to your presentation to promote reinforce the point your attempting to make. Very cheap, easy to complete and will certainly add interest to your presentation.

...props ..damaged euipment..get the people involved...some one will always have a real life experience they will share..... we do a "what if "quiz verbally.its a grind...but worth it

Thanks for all the responses. much appreciated.
I currently use Powerpoint and a flip chart.
Adding videos and photos from personal experience is certainly a good idea and will take them on board.
As with everyone who does these things, the first reaction i get is "yeah but you did this with me two months ago"
I am working in an industry which is not as regulated as the construction industry and trying to get people round to my way of thinking can prove very difficult !!

I agree with the others; Set one time in the day for inductions make sure it's in the contract etc and stick to it "Sorry you missed it, come back tomorrow" works for me Look at the frequency of inductions - If your re-inducting people every two months you could save a lot of time on both sides by starting some kind of register that can track inductions and set the frequency at say "not required in less than six months" or a year - (Depending on the type of business and risks etc) Finally, with the time saved from the two suggestions I've made get some indicative costs for an induction film then do a cost benefit analysis to show how much more productive you could be by running a film and doing other stuff at the same time, and present it to someone who has the authority to say "spend the money" - preferably not in the finance department but a bit higher up the food chain, Good Luck, (I know, it's probably not that simple) Jim

search the internet for stories that are closely related to your industry and within the last year. there are loads of video clips on youtube that you can use i provide fire safety training and have some 30 video clips that i can chose from depending on the audience. Also getting people out of the classroom works well i get the trainee to carry out fire safety tours after some instructions. also get them working in small groups i have a fire extinguisher poster that i have cut up and they have to reassemble it identifying what the fire extinguishers are and what class of fire they should be used on.
I normally do this as a first exercise it gets people from expecting another PP they also know they will have to participate during the course and it lets you get an understanding of there knowledge so far on the subject.
I still use PP as it gives structure to the course and they can visually take the information in as well as me talking about the subject. the longest course i run is a day and i look at no longer than 45 minutes of PP before they are doing some activity also add in video clips during the PP and photos as text only PP is very boring and they will soon stop taking in the information. Try to keep it fun as well.

Another point if you do a group exercise and they need to give feedback to the class don't ask them to appoint someone in the group otherwise they will spend 10 minutes discussing who is going to stand up. just pick someone at random in the group if they aren't very good then pick someone else to explain the next stage / thought.

Hi Colin,
I have a risk assessment card game I use which can be adapted for Inductions. There are three sets of cards 1 - hazards 2 - risk and 3 workplace precaution. usually have groups of 2/3 working together and they have to match the cards. As the answers can be for more than one this instigates discussion around risks and reasonable measures. I change the cards depending on group and change them every now and then in case someone has been before and remembers.
I've also used a quiz format and had quite a lot of dicsussion rising from this. An example of one question I use is: There's a cable trailing across the corridor do you a) tell your mate about it in the pub that night b) wait til someone trips and then say I knew that was a hazard c) find out where the cable leads to and speak to someone there about the risk
There always someone picks a!
