We have recently stated a refurbishment of an old building which will need some substantial propping installed. We have had a design for the propping from a structural engineer. One question I have been asked is if we can install the propping ourselves, following the design. We would of course get the structural engineer to inspect the propping before loading it and also have a temporary works coordinator carryout checks and keep a register of the checks. I have looked at BS 5975 and did not notice anything about certain training for the erector of the propping. Although I do understand that everyone should be competent to do the task they are given. If there is a specific requirement can anyone point me in the right direction to it
Many thanks Steve

We will only use our shuttering carpenters, and concrete gangs for erection and dismantling of temp works requiring props. This way we know that they have the experience to complete the job to the required design. But when working for other larger company's they had their own gangs for this work.

Shickey The requirement for training is covered by both the HASAWA 1974 etc and the CDM2007 Regs. Both these refer to information, instruction and training and competencies respectively. This includes temporary works

Hello Shickey, have a look at HSe guidance CIS56, gives all the details for installation and monitoring of temporary works ( props and shores etc)
