With the no smoking within work related buildings coming into being thanks to the Health Act (I think it was) would the forum members be still inclined to include it the their company H&S policy? I'm currently reviewing ours and wondered if its still required or could it be suitably shortened.
The forums views would be appreciated.

The Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations 2006 brought in smoke free for premises and there have been subsequent Regulations for vehicles and vehicle operators. (See the web site Smokefree England). Our company still have a policy which covers 1 side of an A4 page. This has been used recently to clarify the position of smoking in vehicles. Review the document but keep it

Surely you need to consider the fire safety aspect of smoking as well.

Barrie,
We issued a final corporate smoke free policy in 2007 which is reviewed annually but as it has now sort of settled into accepted culture this review period will be extended. In our H&S Policy we have a single page outlining the main points and referring anyone to HR or the intranet page for a copy of the full policy.
This seems to be adequate and acceptable to management/unions/employees.

Kate It's just the smoking policy I'm looking at during the review, fire safety comes under a different section in our H&S policy. Poppy Thanks for correcting me on the legislation and yes ours fits to one page as well but thought with the advent of The Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations 2006 a briefer note would have sufficed and save a page in print offs'. But doesn't (or shouldn't) the smoking policy have anything along the lines of "No smoking by the flammable storage area" or "No cigarette butts in the dustbin" derived from the fire risk assessment?

I'd totally agree with this Kate. My organisation operates sites which hold large stocks of waste paper and cardboard. I think its VERY important to drive home the fire safety message especially in such circumstances. Perhaps that the point, the smoking policy should reflect the needs of the business.

Reference the last post, smoking is only allow on our site at a specific point well away from combustibles. The only thing I cannot cater for is the randomness of human nature ignoring / forgetting what you've told not to do.
