Good afternoon All,

Can anyone give me a clear definition of competence in H&s as I need to give my Line Manager /Board Directors a true defintion of competence .My undertstanding is Knowledge, Experience & Certification through training.

Also you will have to look at the areas of competence. Safety practitioners cannot be knowledgable in all fields. From my prespective; mechanical engineering & welding. Get an electrically biased practitioner advising in this area could get a bit tricky

I was taught SKATE during my NGC, although memory serves me my Diploma tutor wasnt a fan of it for some reason.

Cant remember why though!

Hi Ian

I recently attended a HSE presentation to the Institute of Quarrying where we were told that they (HSE) are taking the definition of competence straight from the NVQ definition of competence. This has been taken from the MPQC Glossaries web page.

"Competence
Competence is the ability to apply knowledge, understanding, practical and thinking skills to perform activities within an occupation to the required standards expected in employment."

I have just been reading the item linked from SHPlus:

"Competence standards for health and safety regulators to be piloted"

Their definition of competence is a combination of Knowledge, Skill and Attitude...
