Hi All,
Just looking for some views on whether an MS should contain a RA, even though a site specific statement and RA has already been completed. Just seems to be doubling up on work?
My take on it is that a MS should use the RA to convey in simple language to the operatives and client etc. the sequence of works and control measures in place to mitigate risks, not delving into matrices etc.
Cheers for any views.

If the MS is intended as a written work instruction then it should be "self-contained" however there is a reasonable presumption that competent people will be doing the work and this will determine the level of detail required. MS prepared at Client request (often at second-stage tender) can be a different kettle of fish, as the purpose here is not so much to provide a work instruction, rather to demonstrate to the client that you are competent to do the work and can describe a safe method (this doesn't always mean the MS is actually used on-task). Upshot is the "Method Statement" is an ill-defined term?

Most companies want the risk assessment separate from the method statement, I just attach the RA to the back of the MS, I have been working on 4 different sites over the last 6 months, and they all wanted MS,& RA separate

The usual practice is to prepare RA based on MS and in Oil & Gas Field construction a TRA session is conducted and only then permit is issued for work. The activity RA of each firm and Site includes these points when it is accompanied with MS the RA becomes more specific for the job and additional situational requirements can be included.

I'm with Terry I attach RA to MS and have never had a problem having my RAMS passed
However saying that I have been asked to separate MS and RA but all held within a single file, which is no problem - all depends how main contractor wants his MSRA's
Would it not be good if all main contractors would get together and agree a format for producing and presenting site specific RAMS

That would be an excellent idea and you would think that the UKCG would have already have got their heads together on this one.
I currently work for a specialist contractor and we currently have around 12 different method statement formats to satisfy our current client base would certainly make life easier if the UKCG came up with a standard format.
