I have recently carried out a risk assessment for an office worker and one of the issues raised was the chair she has at her desk. She enquired about the purchase of a "pregancy chair" as apparently she had the use of one during her last pregnancy at her previous employment. Now I have had a look around some office furniture websites and I can't find any chairs that are specific for pregnant office workers. Plenty of "ergonomic chairs" but how would I know if it was suitable for someone who is pregnant? Has anyone else had to source such chairs and if so where from? Or has anyone got any alternative suggestions? Thanks John

I often get requests to carry out pregnancy RA's, we carry out Workstation Assessments as part of tyhe RA. Got to admit that we have never had to change any chairs, never heard of pregnacy chairs unless she is talking about the kneeler chair that can sometimes be found.

I suggest you discuss with the individual what the chair looked like. I've never heard of a pregnancy chair, however her previous employer may have provided a chair with additional back support. If her current chair is not fully adjustable Back, height support etc. This may be what she is indicating.

As with previous posters I have carried out a fair few Expectant Mother RA's and work station assessments but have never had any issues with chairs. As Poppy said as long as chair is fully adjustable and in good condition not causing disscomfort it should be ok. We did have two ladies who used additional support at the back and maybe that will help.

We do the usual pregnancy risk assessments but also use a company who supply the "pregnancy chair". They are a well known "posture correct" company - google and you will find the link. They come in and do the full ergonomic assessment and we follow their recommendations. And I have no association with the company whatsoever - I did the risk assesment - my HR department referred the lady concerned. David
