I have a quick question over the responsibility for gas pipes in a domestic situation. The situation is a described below.
Within a house, the pipes that used to feed the gas meter are still in situ but the gas meter was at some unknown time in the past been moved outside.
My understanding is that if these pipes were still connected to the gas meter the national grid in the UK would be responsible for them. I have spoken to the nation grid and they passed me to the gas supplier who passed me back to the national grid both saying they where not responsible.
Could someone clarify the situation and let me know who I should be contacting to get the pipe removed.
Please note there is no isolation valve, to be seen in the house for these old pipes.
Thank you

What's the reason fro getting the pipes removed (house demolition etc) i would have thought you would want to get a new meter installed. my view would be that it is down to the local gas supplier in that area (not who bills you though) i would have thought they would be responsible from the street connection to your meter.. how is it currently isolated if you have no meter installed or no obvious isolation point within the property?
It's not like the water where you have a stopcock in the street or at least i don't think so.

Sorry if I was not clear. The pipes that need to be removed would have feed the old gas meter, there is a new gas meter installed on the outside wall of the property. I need to have the pipes removed as I am not happy having them in the poperty as deadlegs.

You will probably find the pipe you are talking about is simply an abandond pipe not connected to the main gas supply and just sits in the ground as the cost of removing it can be quite high, they just leave them. If there is no valve on the end to close the gas supply off you can assume that to be correct. If however there is a valve then assume it is still connected and contact the gas company who will arrange for it to be inspected, at your cost I'm afraid. When you are sure that it is no longer connected to the gas supply you can then arrange for it to be removed.
