Hi Is anyone willing to give me any pointers on where to start with formailsing our policy on school age children coming into our organisation on week long placements please? We carry out specific RA's etc but we are looking some formal guidelines for managers to follow; everything is done a bit ad-hoc at present. Thanks in anticipation Stu

Hi Stuie I am currently drafting my policy and I started with http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg364.pdf and the HSE young persons pages: http://www.hse.gov.uk/youngpeople/index.htm which have been very useful. I think the hardest things have been trying to explain to managers the need for sufficient (but not over protection) supervision, the need for the agreement of the departmental employees to have a work placement (as not all employees are child friendly) and the need to have the obligatory paperwork completed prior to the placement commencing. I trust this is of some use. Brgds Rod

You can have all manner of documentation, but the most critical one, in my view is/are:- - named/designated supervisor, who in reality will be employees rather than line managers. We have a proper schedule/timetable for the week/fortnight . This is a win-win for both safety and the student as it requires all to consider in advance what the student is goin to do rather than simply leaving it to someone when the trainee arrives(this may not be practicable for all placements) -a robust site induction including specific dos and donts, but on a sensible basis

Spot on Jay, we do exactly the same, you will be surprised how enthusiastic our members of staff get when they know they have an hour slot to show the student what they do at work through the day, its a win win situation. Also be mindful of the hours that they are on your premises, and the extra breaks they need as minors. good luck don't get stuck down in bureaucracy and enjoy the event.

Look on the Staffordshire Partnership WEB site . There is a lot of information about work experience and policy. I was until recently the health and safety manager for work experience throughout Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent
