The RPE will provide protection up to a concentration of 4x, 10x or 20x the workplace exposure limit.

Please look through HSG 53 to gain an insight into the selection and protection factors for respirators Just a quick note remember to ensure all operatives assigned to wear Respirators are given a face fit test for every make and model of RPE to be issued and that there is a one hour rule attached to a none powered respirator

APF is the protection factor for the RPE.

Effectively it is the multiplier between what the user receives at the face (behind the RPE) and what is in the environment.

Say, through workplace sampling you knew a material was present in concentration of 1,000 mg/m3.
The substance has a WEL of 100 mg/m3.

You would need an APF of 10 as an absolute minimum. In truth you would want an APF of 20 for this to allow for variations in the concentrations in atmosphere.

Remember to consider other factors such as face fit, compatibility with other PPE and the levels of oxygen (BA needed, not RPE) etc.
