Employers must have EL insurance but what about self employed /small businesses? Some of our subcontractors say that they don't employ anyone so why should they have EL insurance, but I feel that at short notice they may need extra help and employ someone, even if its for a day or two. So should these small businesses have EL insurance cover? Thanks for any advice. Steve

No Self employed are exempt from the EL(Compulsory Insurance) Requirements as are family businesses employing only family members and are not Limited Co's and Public bodies

There are a number of exemptions, see http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/hse40.pdf , otherwise, yes they should!
