My company owns several items of mechanical plant (Truck-mounted crane, Fork Lift Truck, Telehandler, MEWPS) the use of which is currently restricted to within the boundaries of our operational site. We now expect to have to drive these pieces of equipment short distances along public roads, albeit infrequently ( once per month) and over short distances (0.25km) , to new facilities currently being constructed. Can anyone please advise as to:- •what the certification requirements are for such pieces of equipment in order to render the equipment legally "road-going", or •where I can locate this information Your help is much appreciated Regards

Try direct.gov When we use dumpers on the road they have to comply with RTA, lights, indicators, no plates and road tax, but I think if under 1000yrds as long correct insurance ,road licence held, and infrequent use then not applicable. Could be wrong though.

Geoff I have recently went through a similar process at our site. We use a forklift truck onsite and have to cross a side-road to move from one area to another, this is fairly infrequent - maybe 3 or 4 trips a week. Having spoken to the DVLA and our insurers they advised us that the journeys were too frequent and that the vehicle must be registered for use on a public road and we will subsequently have to pay Vehicle Excise Duty (Road Tax). Due to the age of the vehicle we didnt have the V5 so had to register it as a Q plate. This process was drawn out and took 3mths to resolve as the DVLA wanted to inspect the FLT before taxing. However, they failed to arrive despite several requests by myself and eventually taxed the FLT without inspection. With regards MOT requirements - download form V112, it explains potential reasons for exemption from MOT (available from the http://www.direct.gov.uk...groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065277.pdf). Ours was exempt under category F 'Vehicles used only to pass from land occupied by the person keeping the vehicle to other land occupied by them, and not travelling on the road for more than a total of six miles a week' Hope this helps
