Well Hi all

in our infinite wisdom for a short period of time we will be leasing in giant dinosaur exhibits from the states
what H+S considerations do I need to consider, eg stability during high windspeeds, stability of the exhibits loading / off loading, fencing off. How to keep inquisitive children away! General maintenance cranage.

should we write or ask for a design risk assessment. Phew........

many thanks

Dave

Be careful of Chinese spies stealing top secret microfilm from the bones of a diplodocus (see the film One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing for reference).

In all seriousness, it sounds like an interesting problem to face - have you tried speaking to the Natural History Museum or similar facility who will probably have plenty of first hand experience of such matters - they may be able to brief you in what to consider. Make sure you are fully covered for insurance purproses too.

Well this thread has certainly got a lot of potential to go astray!

I assume as you are hiring these exhibits that the company you are hiring them from has some experience of this? The legislation might be different on the otherside of the pond but the principles of safety management are universal. Try asking them.

Consider reducing the risk of manual handling injuries by replacing big fat heavy T-Rex's with much smaller and lighter Raptors ;-)

Are these fully fleshed or skeletal exhibits? They may turn up in kit form.

Now that's an interesting project. The controls will depend on a number of factors ie weight, stability, inside/outside and so on. Good advice already given, also you may need to anchor the monster down and provide a barrier with signage - do not feed the animals!

Try asking the supplier if they have a generic RA which you could take a peek at. Our friends across the pond do tend to be a touch more risk adverse after all...

I can see the headlines now...

"Health and Safety is still prehistoric"

"Velociraptor muzzled"

"Brachiosaurus risk assessed out the need for hard hats but was attacked by a Pterodactyl"

Good luck ;-)
