What qualifications would users expect to see for a college Health and Safety advisor? What else should be present to proves ones competence? how much experience?/specific knowledge?/etc Thanks in advance

Further info: The College is offering under £25,000p/a, yet expect CMIOSH and 10 years experience, is this not a case of expecting to much or is simply being very risk averse or is it just wanting a lot an not being willing to pay for it?

Current climate, Employers in all sectors are going to try the market. They may find someone who can afford to work for that kind of money who needs the work as an infil, someone may just take the job to reach retirement. It's up to the individual at the end of the day what they are or not willing to work for.

Sounds outrageous to me. I have worked across two schools (age from babies to 18 years old) for nearly seven years and my starting salary was more than is on offer from this college and I didn't have 10 years experience - and I came from a Housing Association background. Admittedly my role includes new builds and major refurbishments (and some other construction work) and an across all trades maintenance department. I would expect a minimum of NEBOSH Dip or NVQ4 and say, 3 years experience in maintenance and cleaning contracts etc (I presume the college has a maintenance team). Additionally, (but this can be learnt pretty quickly) the H&S aspects on the academic and sports side of life which are mainly covered by CLEAPS (DfES) and the Associations of each sport. I think the college is cashing in on the unemployment situation and is trying to get a H&S professional on the cheap. After saying that I would still apply for the job and if offered the position try and re-negotiate the remuneration package. If they refused then you could always say no. Rich

..it unfortunately is the norm..it maybe that more than one person has been tring to do the role or even had no one desinated .........maybe the college has HAD to have "designated H/S person" for that post as part of its need to be more pro active..and thats all they can afford out of their budget. Its not a bad working environment...and if you can manage on the salary....

This would depend on a number of factors that we are not aware of from the OP. What size is the college (how many staff/students) and what sort - FE, Tertiary, etc? What is the portfolio of its courses? Science and Engineering would demand usually more 'expertise', though some would suggest that arts can be one of the most difficult to manage effectively. :-) Requiring a CMIOSH with 10 years experience does appear to be excessive when compared to the salary being offered, but if you don't ask you don't get. They may well accept a lesser qualified/experienced person at the end of the day...

Speaking from a previous position of unemployment, whilst the salary is certainly low, it's better than none at all. When you've been trudging down to the Job Cebtre for 6 months you'll bite someone's arm off for £25k and see it as a temporary position until things pick up. I would certainly say that the College are taking advantage of the current financial climate, but then they too are on a tight budget, so you can't blame them.

I would rather stack shelves in a super market or do window cleaning.
