Hi guys I have recently done my MSc in Environment, Health and Safety and have 6 months volunteer/placement work experience with a Environmental Education Center in the Health and safety sector. I am currently unemployed and wanted some guidance as to whether it is the right time for me to apply for an IOSH membership? I also have some financial issues and I am also unsuccessful in getting any kind of EHS job whether its part time, full time, contract or internship.

I am interested in getting in to the waster management or food sector of health and safety. If anyone could give me some guidance as to what I should be to get into these sectors or what kind of additional training and membership I should further take up as I am a fresher and have very little experience in this field.

Membership of a professional body will ususally be an advantage when appying for jobs, therefore why wait for IOSH membership? If your MSc is an IOSH accredited one, you should be able to jong at GradIOSH level.

One of the advantages of IOSH membership is its branch/group network that you could use to your advantage, even if it does not land you a job initially, it may be the means by which you get some experience via shadowing or similar. If nothing, at least you can network.

It does not work in every case but networking at group or branch level can help. Two questions, what interests you about waste management or food manufacture over other sectors? You have not mentioned what region where you are based? Whilst it is not impossible, it is unlikely that a relocation allowance will be offered by an employer for a first appointment.

I am interested in Food Industry and Waste Management because in my undergraduate degree I have studied about food Hygiene and Nutrition as well as waste management. Also during my placement with with an environment education center here in UK I have assisted in the waste team and I find it interesting, but I am open to any sector as long as I get an opportunity to learn and gain knowledge.


I am currently in the North East of UK (Sunderland) and I am awaiting my Post Study Visa. If you could guide me in any more information I would be grateful.
