Anyone else heard that HSE inspections could be reduced by a third from 2011–12 onwards, I am told it was mentioned on BBC’s File on 4 programme on Radio 4.

Yes, heard that myself and it seems they were quoting HSE officials. The government will no doubt distance itself from the cuts by saying that it is up to HSE how they spend their money but the tendency seems to be to relegate H&S compliance to an irrelevance. That is how many businesses see will see it anyway. It is to be hoped that the supply chain pressure that has built up in recent years will be maintained.

A 35% reduction in the budget means something has to give.
