Hi,
We are a food manufacturing site and are required to complete cleaning every day for the processes and equipment. The cleaning, either via CIP (Cleaning in place), COP (Cleaning out of place) or wash downs using hoses. They all involve hot water and generation of steam.
We are in the process of installing new upgraded system at site, IP rated call points and heat detectors, etc but we are continually having issues with false alarms during the washes. This is becoming frequent and i'm worried the mind set of those in charge will always be that the alarms are just false alarms.
We have extraction systems in place to remove the steam in areas but this is not always sufficent. Has anyone any previous experience of this issue and any tips on how to combat it?
Cheers

Steam will set off any smoke detectors you have in these areas, but unless there is a significant amount of steam, it should not be getting hot enough to set off heat detectors. As a firefighter I've seen my fair share of false alarms, but one local food company had a similar problem to yourself and got round it by altering the type of detector head in the areas.

I am a little concerned that you say steam is setting off heat detectors. If this is actually the case there is something very wrong - steam does set off smoke dfetectors but should never set off heat detectors.

I would also agree with your concern about complacency - on a ship I was on we could always tell the time as we always got a fire alarm when the Purser had his shower .....
