There is a large use of trolleys to transfer material. It is seen that people stack so much material on the trolley that it is very difficult to move it. Then the poor worker is seen pushing and pulling (panting ) to move the load. Most of these trolleys are made in house by the fabrication unit. I would like to know how can we advise on evolving a Safe Working Load and mentioning it on each trolley so that this problem can be addressed. Pl. note that there are trolleys of different sizes and types of wheels.
Any help in this regard will be appreciated.
Warm regards
Raj

HIYA RAJ
THE FIRST THING THAT JUMPS OUT TO ME IS HAVE YOUR WORKFORCE HAD ANY TRAINING IN MANUAL HANDLING.
MANUAL HANDLING REGS.STATE THAT IT IS THE EMPLOYERS DUTY TO ELIMINATE MANUAL HANDLING WHEREVER POSS,OR REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY WHERE REASONABLY PRACTICAL.
IT SEEMS THAT WHILST YOU HAVE TRYED WITH THE TROLLEYS,IT HASNT BEEN MONITERED AS THE WORKFORCE WOULDNT BE PUFFING AND PANTING.
THE CODE OF PRACTICE GIVES GUIDELINES FOR LIFTING ,PULLING,PUSHING AND RISK ASSESMENT CHECKLISTS.
SURELY EACH WORKER HAS A DIFFERNT CAPABILITY
OF PUSHING AND PULLING,DEPENDANT ON SIZE,BUILD,AGE AND SEX ETC.
IRRESPECTIVE OF THE SAFE WORKING LOAD OF THE TROLLEYS.
YOU SAY PEOPLE STACK SO MUCH MATERIAL ON THE TROLLEY AND THEN STRUGGLE TO MOVE IT ,AGAIN HAVE THEY HAD ANY TRAINING,INSTRUCTIONS,OR INFORMATION ON THE WEIGHTS THEY ARE MOVING.
HAS THE MATERIAL THEY MOVE BEEN ASSESED,FAILING THIS CANNOT THE WEIGHTS BE MOVED MECHANICALLY.
HOPE YOU FIND YOUR ANSWER,PLEASE KEEP INFORMED.

Gentlemen,
please remember that raj is working in a non-uk airport. Trolleys are possibly loaded by passengers which porters have to move.
Raj, apart from the codes of practice which might give you some good ideas, I can only suggest that you try to make the wheels bigger and the trolley bases smaller. Also, it could be good practice to limit load heights to chest level so that operator can see over the load even in a pushing position.
