Posted By Jack A recent posting drew attention to information about telecommunication masts being available on the IOSH telecommunications specialist group site. I was surprised to see that the IOSH specialist group has simply posted information from a mobile phone company. I have no real quarrel with the information provided, as far as it goes. (Mind it is somewhat surprising that information produced in September 2000 should make no reference to the Stewart Report and the precautionary approach recommended in that report. It also makes no reference to concerns being expressed about non-thermal effects -the NRPB and ICNIRP standards which the article refers to are based only on thermal affects. The Stewart Report pointed out that there is now evidence of biological effects occurring at exposures below these guidelines, although these affects do not necessarily lead to disease or injury. Consequently the Stewart Report concluded that it was not possible at present to say that exposure to RF radiation, even at low levels below national guidelines, is totally without potential adverse health affects and that the gaps in knowledge are sufficient to justify a precautionary approach.) However, this is not my main point. I question whether IOSH should be promoting, without comment, the views of commercial organisations (however well intentioned). In my view it could detract from the independence of the Institution. After all it is part of the code of conduct that members must maintain professional independence in the execution of their function.

Posted By Nigel Wilkinson In my capacity as Chairman of the recently formed Telecommunications Specialist Group,(TSG), I offered a One 2 One document for the new TSG web pages. All reference to One 2 One was removed from the document before submission to IOSH. However, IOSH have chosen to credit the document to One 2 One. The document is intended to provide general information to members of the public. If you require further detailed information please contact me direct at nigel.wilkinson@one2one.co.uk. If you wish to progress the issue of IOSH using information from commercial organisations on its web site, please raise the issue with Angela Wheatcroft at IOSH.
