The local authority I work for are keen for those operatives carrying out repetative manual handling tasks to wear back support belts in order to reduce the risk of injury (refuse crews lifing 55 litre bins to and from vehicles). I have done some research on this and found that the HSE do not advocate such PPE as they are unproven in terms of their effectiveness.
Therefore I would have real reservations on issuing such equipment as operatives may class it as PPE which according to the governing body, it is not.
Would the statement by the HSE be sufficient in our defence not to issue such equipment?

The British Occupational Health Research Foundation also condemned them about 10 year ago as a result of research which proved they encourged guys to feel safe and lift more thereby put themselves at increased risk. A flyer was available published by Blue Circle.
