Can anyone suggest a suitable training course for Confined Space Authorisers.

I'm looking from the perspective of taking an overview of the arrangements that should be considered as part of the management of confined spaces.

This sounds like a training need that is specific to a particular organisation and way of doing things.

I would suggest that this should be be a bespoke rather than a generic course.

There is a City & Guilds Level 5 qualification specifically related to Managing Work in Confined Spaces which might be relevant to what you are after. See the link below for further details and you should be able to do a search for providers in your area.

Hi John,

Just prior to Xmas myself and some colleagues undertook confined spaces training for aircraft. The guy that taught us was CMIOSH and delivered the subject in an enjoyable and engaging manner. They maybe able to tailor a course for your requirements. I will PM you their details as I am not sure if the forum rules permit advertising

Evening John,

I took an interest in your post and googled it. There are a myriad of training providers nationally. From experience and in agreement with Frank I would recommend that the provider can tailor the training appropriate to your risk profile. In Devonport working in the ship build / repair industry takes us into tanks / voids / cofferdams / subways as a matter of every day business. There can be 1001 variables with just as many variants of controls. The crux of sound enclosure management, more often than not hinges on vent / RAQ's / and controlled process.

Best regards
Alex

If you're seeking a suitable training course for Confined Space Authorisers that covers a comprehensive overview of the necessary arrangements for confined space management, I'd recommend considering both of these options. Both courses, the one from Human Focus and the other from iHASCO, seem promising.

However, personally, I lean towards the Human Focus course. It not only emphasizes quality but also comes with the added advantage of no difference in pricing. Quality education is vital, and the fact that it doesn't come at an extra cost compared to the other option is quite appealing. Take some time to review both courses to ensure they meet your specific needs before making a decision.

I'd recommend considering both of these options.

It may be worth considering the relevance of  making a recommendation to a post that originated and closed in 2014 (some nine years ago) and whose originator last visited the forum on 12th November 2019 so is unlikely to see your efforts.

Post resurrection is typically used for SPAM and/or advertising

On this occasion I don't think that the reply is spamming but perhaps overenthusiastic and indicative that someone who by recent admission apparently has IOSH Managing Safely as their highest level H&S qualification is perhaps not best placed to answer the question put nine years ago.

I certainly wouldn't rely on an entirely theoretical training couse for anyone I was going to send down sewers or into disused railway tunnels, or underground reservoirs or many other types of confined space, as they need to understand how to use gas monitors, whatever type OR types of breathing apparatus might be necessary, perhaps the use of tripod for rescue and/or general entry and other issues where it would be very difficult to get a feel that the trainee has assimilated the training without getting their hands relatively dirty - EVEN if a hole in the ground in a training facility is NOT the same as the real thing, where there are likely to be rats in the sewer etc UNLESS it is e.g. a tank in a chemical works.

AND for many scenarios I wouldn't rely on an entirely theoretica training course for those in charge of putting people into such predicaments either.

For many such people there are established best practice training standards as already mentioned on this thread several years ago.

...and whether the training is for those actually doing the entry or those in charge of sending them there, it will almost invariably need to be made relevant to the circumstances and not be some generic, off the shelf offering.

This is NOT to say that there isn't a place for such generic training. Good starting point for e.g. a health and safety professional taking steps along their learning curve.
