Has any one provided a gym for staff to use in their lunchbreaks (own time)? I've been asked to research it and I know it will depend on the equipment provided etc and do risk assessments, maintenance. Should staff be trained in the use of the equipment like in our local councils gyms. Any advice gratefully received. Anne

When I worked for a university we had gym membership and it was treated the same as a local gym- everyone had a induction to learn how to use the equipment- students and public users went through the same thing. Good luck in your quest! Jodie

Anne Notify the employees regarding common hazards on gym, put some warning signs related common hazards, and supervise them at initial days to see the issues on location when employees are using the facilities.. SHV

Get the best return on an investment in a gym for the workforce by reading Contemporary Sport, Leisure and Ergonomics , Tom Reilly and Greg Atkinson (Editors), Routledge, 2011

If its only for the use of company workers, I would employ the services of a PT to come in and induct all persons, and show how to use equip correctly, because its in the workplace, if anyone pulls a muscle then it could come back on you guys for providing without enough info. Do you have an OH dept? They might like to get involved too on this matter.

Many thanks for the advice. For information, I also checked with HSE (NI) who advised PUWER, management regs and HSW will apply and staff should be inducted. Makes sense! Anne
