Good Afternoon All, My company has their certificate renewal of the ISO 14001 at work in 4 weeks, this will be my first external audit I have done and would appreciate any top tips/advice that you have found helpful. So far I have printed off and reviewed the last 2 audits, and am pulling off the actions from them, ensuring they have been actioned (!) and compiling a list of all the registers, records etc that the auditor has requested to see. I have all compiled a meeting schedule to discuss the appropriate areas with all managers/departmental heads and have set deadlines for these in order that I can collate all the information together. I have also pulled out a 14001 audit checklist as well to prep against. Anything else? Thank you.

As someone who has assisted client prepare for such audits, I let out a groan.......... Really, this is all about your EMS being a living, breathing thing. You do not just dust it off for audits! It should be part of your management systems day to day (same as HS, Quality etc). OK then rant over, good that you have looked at your last audits. What about your internal audits? Done up to date? Actions carried out? Can you prove this? What about your aspects and impacts - can you demonstrate your carrying out of control measures? Traceability? Are all staff aware? Env improvement plans up tp date? Legislation register up to date? As an auditor and consultant I used to try a simple question, at random, to workers. The question is "who is responsible for environmental protection on this site?". If they say the Env advisor's name, ................. you are in for a long, hard struggle!

Hi Thank you for your response, I have recently joined the company and am rapidly playing catch up on what has been done during the last quarter. Everything you have mentioned in your post I am currently looking at and also bringing up staff awareness that as you have said the EMS is a living breathing thing and is incorporated into a daily routine. I know that the road ahead is a long one but I want to make sure that the staff here realise the impact/cause/effect as well and that everyone plays a part in this. The encouraging news is that those persons who I have had an opportunity to speak are aware of the EMS, it just needs to be brought back to the forefront again.

Hi Having just had a full week's audit last week, I can sympathise! On the environmental side they looked at our impact assessments, and asked what we were doing to reduce the impact on the significant aspects. They had a long look at waste, and how we followed the hierarchy, transfer and consignment notes. Internal audits, legal register, procedures, objectives & targets (measurable?), etc.etc. Basically, as mentioned above, to check that you manage environmental issues, and comply legally. If you need any more, PM me. Cerith
