Hi everyone, After some advice regarding fireman's lifts. Am I right in thinking that you can operate without an operational fireman's lift (if you have one installed), providing you have other suitable means of evacuating non-ambulant people from the building or getting them to a place or relative safety? To add some further context, the building is 8 stories high and has two fully protected exit stairwells, one with a fire fighting lift lobby. It is possible the lift will be out of action for up to a week and I just wanted to ensure there are no other reasons i.e. brigade requirements to have the lift operational. Logic tells me that lifts do from time to time fails, so alternative means should be plausible? Many thanks DJ

You are right that a review of your FRA would be require in respect of ensuring an alternative MOE for your mobility impaired occupants. This review will need to be recorded. I would suggest it should be the aim of the temporary emergency plan to achieve evacuation to a place of safety - not a place of relative safety - in order to be compliant, as you cannot utilise the fire service within your emergency plan. In addition, I would place a clear sign adjacent, or over the firefighting lift control switch stating the lift is out of action. If absolutely necessary - eg, you have significant high risk occupancy - you may wish to inform you local fire station, but my default position for an 8 storey low risk premises would be to stick with just the sign.
