Hello All

Has anyone come across a piece of software/dvd/book etc which I could use in my recruitment and selection process for HGV drivers in order to test their theory and hazard perception.  I have used the standard DVLA dvd, however although detailed my boss doesn't like it and wants us to look at something else.  Can anyone help.

Eddy Why are you bothering with this the LGV Drivers have just in the last few years have to have taken a CPC course 35 hours covering what you are discussing and more. I believe it is a good idea to vet the drivers but not in what they have recently done. This is only my opinion and I am not trying to undermine you in any way. Ta Alex

Why dont you consider driver training with refreshers inhouse if you have a budget to train someone up as the driver trainer/assessor.

Issue everyone with a driver handbook from RHA/FTA as to how to do things or write your own, also a copy of the Highway code, and if you want to create a test, think of issues you have had previously as "gaps of knowledge" and then devise answers of multiple choice based on the sort of answers you had previously (good/bad/indifferent) and you will get a great test, (and a knowing laugh) when you try it out.

the best thing is to sit in the cab with them and have a chat as they drive round the block, much better and faster test. (have a camera in vehicle if need be to record for evidence of assessment if need be), but within 5-10 minutes you should get a good idea.

the fors standard stuff has some things in it for judging drivers - https://www.fors-online.org.uk/cms/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/FORSStandard_v4.0_Standard.pdf, and there is an instructor book from DVA for getting people prepared for instruction/testing.

perhaps also use the guide to maintaining roadworthiness's drivers responsibilities or the safe operator's guide and some content from the check it out video, (now on youtube). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4iWawNHanc&index=2&list=PLevp0xVZc7FLbFZp7tDoHO5uHy9a0BkZ5

get a list of stuff together and create a training matrix, so that you can answer, "we have trained them and they are competent because ..." and here are dates, times, content etc.

also look at loading as it is the topic of the moment... nina day has an hsl guide to it as a book, and trade associations hav content via their shops. http://www.rhaonline.co.uk/bookshop-maps/rha-professional-drivers-handbook-201617---dri-013-_-.html and http://www.rhaonline.co.uk/bookshop-maps/rha-professional-drivers-handbook-201617---dri-013-_-.html
