Can anyone clarify the comptence requirments for driving School mini buses. We have staff that occaionally take students out on trips and visits, driving is not their main role and they are not being paid specifically to drive. As far as we are aware its not for hire and reward.
In the past we have always insisted they have D1 on their licence and ideally have MIDAS or we ask them to take an online driver awareness course. I was reading that they were looking to introduce the need for CPC but doing further research it appears this hasnt come into effect in the UK only in Ireland and it may not be needed if they already have D1 Can anyone clarify the situation. Thank you

Quick clarification on theuX5F school. Is it a private funded school or public? If it is the former, then it mostly likely will be driving for hire & reward and all that brings with it |its it’s charitable status that differentiates.
I might well question if it is correct to let someone driver the school bus if they have not been assessed in that class of vehicle and one of the best ways to evidence an assessment is to pass the relevant driving licence test or other external relevant driver assessment. Could the school, in all honesty, justify their position should it be involved in an incident and they chose to let an un-assessed member of staff transport the children around!! This is for FE so its usuallally adults. We insist they have D1 on their licence and we offer an online driver awareness course and a familursation session if requested. For the schools we insist on the MIDAS training/assessment Andrew
