We have a chap who has a NOCN Level 3 Diploma for Trade Union Health and Safety Representatives Qualification and he is moving into a H&S role at one of our sites.  Internally for this role we request that all persons have/or work towards obtaining a NEBOSH Certificate to aid them in the knowledge and allow them to support the site adequately.

The chap acheived the above mentioned qualification in 2015 and I have been asked of this would be a suitable alternative to the NEBOSH certificate as it is at the same level or whether the chap needs to still work towards the NEBOSH certificate.

I have tried googling etc and failed to establish if it would be a suitable equivalent qualification so I am hoping someone on here can provide some advice on whether this would suffice as an alternative or whether I should recommend him to still do the NEBOSH cert.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Low15562,

At a previous employment several years ago, I encountered a similar situation. Looking at the course and what it covered, I was not convinced that it looked at hazards and risks in the same way that a NEBOSH Certificate course did. He then went on to do his NEBOSH Certificate and confirmed the point himself.

Hope this helps.

Hi I have the same qualification Level 3 trade union diploma which is equivalent to the Nebosh general certificate, i am TECH IOSH because of this fact, so it would be a waste of time and money studying for the same outcome.

The qualification level is one thing, the course content is another. I would stick by the policy you have and have him work towards this.

Having done the same thing in the distant past. The T.U course does not cover what is needed to be a competent Safety professional.

I agree that taking the NEBOSH or indeed, NVQ or NRCQ is a must.

I have recently completed this course in 2018 which by the way has now been downgraded qualification level wise although I hasten to add that in 2015 it will have been at the higher level.  I did the course to improve my knowledge and because at the time I was lead to believe that it would give me the level of qualification required for TechIOSH.  I was not happy with the course content at all and i would argue that I learnt very little from a H&S perspective that I didn't already know from years of being a H&S Trade Union rep in the workplace.  I followed this up with the NCRQ to get the required level of qualification and to fulfil my desire for additional levels of knowledge - This course delivered in all respects and was much more of a challenge.

In short the qualfication my be at the correct level but my opinion is that it was lacking in content and that as a Trade Union H&S Rep it taught me very little.

Thanks for you comments, much appreciated - I have advised that due to the course content the employee should still take the NEBOSH to give him further awareness and knowledge to aid him in his role.

Thanks agian for your comments.
