Is there anything within the distribution industry that can be fitted to side pallet doors of HGV trailers to protect drivers from falling out when moving pallets around? These must be retractable and limited intrusion into the trailer space. 

I have looked on the internet but to no avail. Dock protection barriers are the closest thing that may resemble a guard.

HGV side pallet doors - I can visualise rigid and curtain sided trailers but ones with doors down the side?

Or are these flat bed trailers with drop sides?

By retractable I take it you intend to subsequently off-load from the side - in which case how would the driver gain access to achieve this? 

Much clearer - do have to ask why the trailer design lacks access from both sides which would essentially eliminate the need for personnel to work on the trailer bed

If you are ok with the concept of modifications could the rear pallets be loaded onto a low-level rolling platform, which can be winched from side to side and locked into position. That way if you offload two pallets at one location, they will not fly about on route to second destination. That way no person at height (elimination). NB by winch I sort of mean threaded bar that rotates to draw a platform over from side to side (with winding handle or electric motor).
