Good afternoon
I've just started a new career in h&s and have been dealing with a new diesel tank being placed outside the factory. I have been able to find all the relevant information with where to place it and the correct bunds.but I cannot find anything about what signs I need on it or if o need any at all?

Am I just going to far by putting signs up say what it is and putting warning signs up?

Any help is much appreciated.

Normal practice for bulk tanks would be to mimic the hazard warning panel of the transport delivery vehicle

This is the orange plate that carries an emergency action code comprising a number and letter which tells the emergency services how to deal with an incident along with the UN number for the product to allow identification

The advantage with this method is there is one transport pictogram to deal with all readily available from sign suppliers.

...it is normal practice in some industries to mimic the UN number for the product...I wouldn't say it is strictly normal practice....it is very good in respect of your emergency response for the Fire Serevice but if you are going down that route the sign should be the same standard as that on the vehicle - good enough to withstand 15 min fire engulment...Diesel was also brought into the classification for flammable liquids and although you have to be a bit pragmatic here this doe mean that it falls under DSEAR and the storage of flammable liquids...the only real risk though would be of the formation of a flammable mist during delivery/ discharge...EI 15, HSG176 and L138 for DSEAR will help you determine the correct signage...it will also have to be added to you fire risk assessment...
