Hi all,

I am enquiring to find out if the OSHCR is worth joining. I ddi read negative reviews when it was first started but I am curious to find out if it has improved.

Are there any benefits of the membership if you work as a freelancer?

Regards

Russ

As a client can honestly say never bothered with this register.

Given its drift within the HSE web site from its original position of prominence it would appear to be a poor place to post details in the hope of attracting business

Nice idea, but I get the impression that it's never achieved the prominence that was hoped for.

As a consultant I did think about joining as I tick all the boxes, but decided to save on the registration fee & not one single client has asked for it as an essential criteria, probably because they have never heard of it!

When this started we took out Corporate membership which required at least one individual membership. We took out a few and steadily reduced the number until I decided enough was enough. In a few years one single major client thought it was a good idea. We ticked their box, didn't get the job and a couple of years later it was time to stop paying the fees.

There is talk of the scheme being given a revamp; time will tell whether that makes any difference.

Not involved in it myself, but can’t help feel that this was implemented to solve a problem that people didn’t have. Sorry but we don’t seem to hear of issues which are solely down to poor advice from the consultant (yes one or two, but not much). Issues therefore must be down to companies just not listening. There may be instances where consultants over egg an issue and cost a company a little more, but this register would never be able to stop that. So time to stop wasting H&S people time and money on things not wanted and no real use.

Just my opinion of course.

Chris

Hi all,

Many thanks for all your posts, I'm still not sure if it is the right thing to join the OSHCR.

I am looking at taking on some freelance H&S work on a ad-hoc basis. I thought that by joining the OSHCR would help me along with this and it was the correct route to go down.

Regards

Russ

What kind of H&S work on a ad-hoc basis are you interested in?

I am looking at joining existing H&S teams or companies as an 'add on' so to speak. I specialise in Working at Height, Difficult Access and Confined Space Entry in various industry sectors in on-shore and off-shore environments.

With almost 30 years of experience in these areas I am interested in bolstering Health & Safety policies or operating as a Co-Auditor on sites.

 Thanks

Thanks, Roundtuit

Since this thread has been bumped.......

This was discussed at the April meeting of IOSH Council. Minutes report that:

"Adopt and expand the OSHCR register – OSHCR Ltd, UK HSE and IOSH were finalising arrangements"

Not sure whether "adopt" should read "adapt".

Nothing jumps out from the OSHCR website to say there has been a significant change to its set up to date.
