This isn't strictly a health or safety question, more environmental, so apologies in advance. Does anyone have any experience with sub metering? I've collected and analysed data for our 2 sites' overall energy consumption and noticed that we have quite a high baseline use (when nobody is at work). I'd like to drill down into a few key areas and pin point the areas of high usage. One particular area I want to collect data on is the heating units for our ultrasonic immersion tanks (around 1000 litre capacity). How would I go about installing sub metering to collect half hourly readings of energy use? Are the portable options, or fixed only?

I was involved in a similar project a number of years ago were a pumping station was using a lot of power. I am not an electrician but I remember putting voltage or amp clamps around the electrical cables. These came with data loggers which we were able to calibrate (time and date) and we monitored the power over a couple of weeks. From this we were able to establish the pumps, lights, heating etc. were not using excessive power and we tracked the use down to a cable leaving the facility which was cut off! You may have to calculate the energy use from the voltage or amp readings. I also remember the electrician being worried there may be an earth leakage.

I have experience of both fixed, and temporary metering & current monitoring. You have a few options. I would like to understand a little more before I jump in with a recommendation though if I could please.
