So you finally get ahead on the welding fume situation and your welders seem to have a problem with their PPE!

As you know it gets super hot some of the time in this country and welders in our fabrication shops are still required to wear their overalls.  Originally we said aprons and sleeves only need to be worn for heavy welding/cutting/grinding - however this left  us a grey area and gave those who didnt want/couldn't be bothered to put them on - a way out of not wearing them.

However, due to some damage on the overalls and of course the additional layer of protection that an apron and sleeve will give I think we should make them compulsory.  Of course we will get some damage on the overalls but there seems to be bigger culprits than others.

Thoughts?

Your final sentence is very difficult to understand are you saying there is damage or there will be damage?

Correctly specified welding overalls should not need additional controls.

If you are asking them to wear a heavy leather bratt and sleeve in addition then I am not surprised there is reluctance due to thermal discomfort which as an employer you have a duty to control.

Rather than forcing employees why not try their job in the kit you suggest and see how you find it.

It wasn't mentioned, so I don't know the details.  Do you have booths where the work takes place, do you have Local Exhaust Venitaltion to remove welding fume?  If not thats one thing you can think of.

Some of the newer welding masks now come with forced air flow, which is much more comfortable to work in.

Depending on local conditions regarding heat stress which at times can be horrible, perhaps set up a giant industrial fan to blow over the workforce, these are used a lot in hot work zones abroad, often with a water drip to humidify automatically.  I think an american company is called the Big ass fan company.

Again, it's down to local conditions, set up a cool room, so workers can go and cool down for 10 minutes.

Your company can't be the only one in the world doing that work, so maybe phone up a competitor and simply ask them what they do?
