On a slightly more positive note, what would we all hope for coming out of the current COVID crisis (apart from a job at the end of it!)?

I would hope for a change in our sense of priorities, to value what is truly important, and dispense with the banal and useless trash we are bombarded with day after day.

Agree Biker1,

I'd also like to see more consideration of others and less selfishness.

I would also hope that the world will learn from this, and realise just how delicate the balance of the ecosystem is.

Greed is not good.

Ever the optimist I would hope that enough of the world would recognise that we only have the one planet and that we need all to work together to create a sustainable civilisation that is fair to all.

Realistic? Not in the least, but at my age perhaps I can still dream...

We can hope but remain realistic? May be the message from the likes of Attenborough and Thunberg might eventually sway the egomaniacs (other words could be used).

A world where Trump and his greedy kin are set adrift from the rest of humanity - yes I feel sorry for the future hand maids but you had been forewarned (the book arrived in 1985 under Ronald Reagan whilst the mini-series arrived in 2017 under Donald Trump).

The global conscience realising that greed and capitalism have us all in slavery (and not just the poor sods making Jeff Bezos personally richer).

Removal of all the vaccuos shells whose claim to fame is solely from their pseudo social media driven fame - they aren't even fit for main stream media.

Stop thinking in the short term

Stop looking at doing things in the cheapest quickest way possible

Plan ahead-it will cost money now but in the long run it will be worth it.

Don’t assume that things will remain the same for ever: the good times never last long enough

Don’t assume that someone else will bail you out if it all goes tits up

Health and Safety is not a magic wand that will make everything “normal” again-there is always a “new normal” around the corner.

In our modern society, we have sacrificed quality for cheapness. Competition has conditioned us to go for the lowest price on everything, and as a result, things are produced down to a price instead of up to a standard. I would hope that the current problems with imports of PPE, tests etc, and the stocking issues faced by supermarkets, might help us appreciate quality once again.

A return to "evidence based decision-making" would be helpful.

But apparently that is a politically loaded term, so I don't hold out for it.

"Evidence-based dccision making" is a worthy concept. The problem with it is that one can be selective with the "evidence". If one's searches are suitably framed and the sources appropriately selected it is frequently possible to find evidence that meets the needs of the decision.

Yes, caveats apply as with all these things.

Well I was going to say a lottery jackpot win so I could give up work, until I noticed the bit about greed. I think in reality if everyone in the world died leaving only two people alive there would still be greed and envy.

On a more positive note I would hope the slower pace of life could continue. It would be nice if the random acts of kindness would also continue.

However, I have been told to take my rose-tinted glasses off before, so I’m not holding out much hope. I suspect nothing will be learnt from this outbreak and things will just go back as before in a surprisingly short period of time.

Some great points have been posted.

Over the years a lot of the country's manufacturing ability fell by the wayside and focus was placed on finance/ service industries etc. The country really needs to bring back manufacturing.

Fully agree Adrian. The current problems with imports of PPE, equipment and tests have illustrated the need for us to be more self-sufficient as a country, and the number of companies transferring over to producing masks etc has illustrated our ability to do so (does anyone know if Dyson managed to make and supply their much heralded new type of ventilator?).

Although this is supposed to be an optimist thread my gut feeling is that people will conclude that the weakness of the curent economic system is that it is too dependent on people, so there will be even more automation of manufacturing and also of the routine paper pushing that loads of people are engaged in.  In the not too distant future I can image that the most successful firms are those that have completely automated everything and ideally that are trading with similarly automated business with no humans in the loop. At that point it won’t matter if we all die of some disease or not: business will just keep rolling on.

My mind wandered onto this whilst walking the dog this morning. These are the things I came up with.

I hope the Health system continues with some of the practices implemented for COVID-19. In particular:

* Triage - this should be used every time someone requests use of any health service

* Phone/Skype consultations - these should be the default for GPs, specialist consultants etc. (with triage being used to decide what is optimum for each case)

* Grown up attitudes to death - using “do not resuscitate” instructions more often and letting people die when appropriate instead of making intrusive and harrowing interventions that prolong life but not quality of life.

I hope the PPE for health workers is properly looked into. All we hear about is supply issues but we must look at demand. The PPE quantities being used are just staggering and can’t be right.

I hope there will be recognition for statisticians and mathematicians. Whilst hundreds of thousands of people will probably be saved by health case workers I suspect millions of lives will be saved by the work of a small number of statisticians and mathematicians working globally who have guided social distancing and other public policy.

I hope people keep up with exercising locally. As well as the obvious health effects I feel it will improve local society (seeing your neighbours), and help people appreciate what is on their door stop so that they feel less inclined to travel. That should then reduce environmental impacts of frivolous holidays (I just don’t think the world can accept the environmental impact of luxury cruises, cheap package holidays etc.)

I hope people realise that the high street has to change. The irony that people moan that shops are closing but also say we need to stop buying single use and disposable items has to be resolved.

I hope our local vegetable, meat and fish suppliers keep delivering to our houses so we can be less reliant on supermarkets.

I hope pedestrians remember they have to look before crossing the road (during my one hour bike ride yesterday I had 3 step out in front of me without looking, I guess because there are few cars around).

I hope our two sons who are both at university manage to get jobs and people in the future are understanding of all the kids whose education will have been affected by the events of 2020.

Another contribution as you can’t keep a gob[expletive deleted]e down!

I have been looking at the coverage of things like POTUS’s suggestion about the internal medical uses of  disinfectants and the attacks on telecoms engineers who might (but aren’t) spreading the virus on the 5G network, and wondering, would it not be nice for some people to take advantage of the lock down  and do a bit of self-education.  Some years ago (about 10) I overhead two teenage girls on a bus and one sad to the other: “Can’t wait to finish school. I’ve learnt everything that I need to know”. Trump probably said the same thing when he sold his first condo. There seems to be a lack of understandings of things and some people seem almost proud of the ignorance.

They do not appreciate, History which tells us that people have made mistakes in the past will made new mistakes in the future. It also tells us no matter how bad it is, it can always get worse.

Geography tells us that everywhere is different and just because something works in your neck if the woods doesn’t mean that it will work everywhere.

Engineering tells us that things wear out and need maintaining and the cheaper you build something the quicker it wears out.

Science tells us that they world works in a certain way and no matter how you wish for it to be different, no matter how much money or influence you have, you have to accept that something’s will just happen that way.
