Hi all, we have a member of staff who requires additional measures in place (after being diagnosed with a chronic condition). I haven't done this before, but what format of document would you use? Would you just do a risk assessment for the one individual or use an alternative format to record the findings?

...you will need OH or certainly HR intput...as you will look at the eisting risk assessment for that persons task and then see how that is affected by thier newfound issue :)
Better for OH to carry it out as they will know how the condition affects cognitive as well as physical functions... you don't really need any different forms....you just need to get the right people in the room including the affected person.. PM me if you need more.. :)

Good luck getting OH to do a risk assessment - my experience is that they come back with the recommendation "a risk assessment should be done". Yes I knew that, that's what I was asking for ...

My approach would be for the risk assessment to be a team approach involving occupational health (who understand the special health aspects), health and safety (who understand the process and health and safety issues), and the person themselves who can comment where their personal knowledge indicates something that might otherwise be overlooked. In this way everyone involved has some 'ownership' of the outcome.

As an afterthought, I would include the line manager responsible for the particular task or area where the affected person would be working. He is the one who would need to know why the particular arrangements were being made and how to ensure compliance.

I have managed a number of OH contracts & Kate is spot on with her comment that the usual response is for the manager to carry out a risk assessment, which in turn just annoys the manager as they were under the assumption that the OH practitioner would have all the answers!
Accordingly, I had to "educate" both our OH providers & managers in the protocols to use in these circumstances, I.e. insist that the manager wrote specific questions that they wanted answering & the provider, give succinct advice wherever possible & not just write "I would like to see x again in y months!

Sorry Kate can't speak for all again ...but that is what we do day in day out and it is about fitting the employee to the work in light of thier condition....we have also advised where people have had the same problem in the past to lead the risk assessment process but have OH in attendance...that might work...please don't throw a rock at the good guys...some of us actually do what we say! :)
