To be honest I use a self made ppt template for presenting the findings of event investigations.
If someone has gone to the trouble of making a specific tool I wouldn't begrudge them selling it, but if you can shape your own to fit how you ultimately file and share the pertinent points then I think you'll get something from the process as well as the end product.

We have a couple that are in use across operations workldwide...main one is Office Timeline...there is a paid and free version...some of our sites use google sheets project planning..
https://online.officetimeline.com/app/#/new-from-template?searchText=
and for Medcial Investigations we have Timeline Pro which is a paid version.. https://www.timelinemaker.com/
There may also be a way to adapt this computer forensics tool to provide the same thing as it has an automatic timeline tool in it...I will have a play as it isn't as easy as it looks and built specifically for computer forensics s and let you know if it is a practical solution... :) http://www.sleuthkit.org/index.php

For simple investigations you could use powerpoint to draw the TapRooT snapchart, otherwise i'd recommend to use MS-Visio. The official taproot software integrates well with the methodology but is really clunky.
