I used to pride myself on how good I was at designing and delivering training.  What made it work well was that I avoided lecturing, used little or no Powerpoint, provided hands-on activities (card-sorting tasks and the like), interacted with the group, encouraged them to interact with each other, and spotted when someone was shy or sceptical or bored or tired and when they needed a change or a break or on the contrary were dazzled by my wit and wisdom.

Now I need to adapt to remote training, probably over Micorsoft Teams which we have been using fairly successfully for meetings.

Clearly I am not the first person to need to start thinking about this, so I wondered if anyone (particularly the professional trainers and those in the education sector) could give some tips or point to some helpful links?  Or is there a good online train the online trainer course?

Im in the same Boat - going to finish of an IOSH Manageing Safely course next week via Teams which was interupted by lock down. Going to be a very different experiance!

...training aside I have been chairing HAZOPs for the past 3 months via Webex...and I think it is actually more efficient.. :)

I've never used M$ Teams yet, but I will have to next Monday when I have to sit a whole day in e-learning with Libben Health and Safety, who will talk to me about the new Health and Safety and the Environment for Construction Workers, as my CPCS card has expired during lockdown.

I think its the same for us all.

Ive used Teams and Zoom, I think they do a job but I cant wait to be delivering in the real world again. For the same reasons as the posters comments, its much more effective. Out of curiosity I completed the NCRQ Managing Safely course and I was so bored. Take that against IOSH M.S in a classroom, no comparison, the craic, the feeding off eachother, the extra stuff that comes out that does not come out in a virtual course. I would say virtual is only about 60% as effective as classroom.

I have had go at this a few times and the issue I have is that if it is set up wrong, you don’t get any feedback from the delegates. If you are presenting to more than a few people, you can’t monitor what they are doing on video and if they are muted you find yourself in a situation where you feel like you are talking to yourself with no idea if anybody is listening to you. I find this disturbing and I have often to stop to reassure myself that there is somebody there. In fact there is something of the séance about it!  Some systems allow for the viewers to make comments but if you are in full flow you don’t really have time to stop and look at the written messages. It would help if you have an assistant to look at the messages and update you with what is going on. There are more sophisticated teaching packages available but I have not had a chance to use them yet, which might deal with this issue.

Having an assistant is a good idea and fortunately I will be able to nominate one.  So I'll go for that one.

There is the opportunity to use a white board and apparantly you can set up rooms so people can do some group work on Teams and go to meeting. I have done a couple of resilience courses and it was OK but I think there were too many on the system so we couldnt have open mikes etc. I am getting my team to use Teams for small sessions with people and it is being well received.

All very useful comments and observations, thank you. Have
been using Teams for meetings for a while now – and if people are disciplined works
well. I have limited my training to 5 people as a first attempt, but would much
rather be back in the room with them for the reasons everyone has said. Not
sure Teams is the best platform for training – I have read about other systems,
but it’s the only tool our IT will approve at the moment so its that or
nothing. Like any H&S person always open to the next challenge which will be just around the corner!

 I agree Bigmac I think you lose so much from the contact of peers away from the classroom, and as the trainer I think i learn something new from ever course i run from the candidates, and have studied by every method you can think off. Never had anyone leave one of my training course's and say they were bored - but then i usualy have chocolates etc as prises for the activities _ not sdure how im going to do that with teams!

What do you think of more gimmicky rewards such as a gift of a dancing penguin on screen, etc?

Bigmac- can I ask how you rate the content of the NCQR course- I had a few sign up from my workplace, if tose who I know completed it I was really surprised that one of them had clearly had not grasped the idea of recognising hazards- to their credit they realised they needed a little help and asked. We spents some time on it and they got there. A couple of others found the scenarios difficult and felt it would be better if you could discuss them.

One of the other is just a bit of a self opinonated idiot. Surprised they signed up as they already know everything.

Not sure if you could eat or drink a penguin on the screen! have run our inhouse training for a while i think i know my audiance! I started out by supplying little dishes of quality street etc on their desks to help keep energy levels up. Took loads home - switched to Harribo never any left! LOL

Update on my original posting saying I was on an e-course next Monday, well the company will not be teach the sylabus I thought I was signing up for, dispite the telephone call confirming they ran that particular course - Safety, Health and Environment for Construction Workers.  It turns out the staff thought the 'Green Card' sylabus was the same, when it's not. 

I've since had to cancel and post a new message to IOSH to fix the web portal from the CITB.
