Hi all, We are looking at replacing our current paint stripper substance with a safer alternative. We've been looking at Benzyl Alcohol - and wondering if anyone has experience with this substance. We are gutting and rebuilding the plant so that it is safer, more efficient not just for the workers, but also for the substance (ie agitation system, filter plant, heating). I have only one MSDS from a supplier, but the second supplier hasn't sent in the MSDS. So are all Benzyl Alcohol paint strippers the same, or are they likely to have varying concentrations depending on the supplier? Any information on this substance will be grately appreciated.

I would be interested to see what your SDS states. de Groot lists benzyl alcohol as a skin sensitiser, so suitable precautions should be taken to prevent sensitisation and subsequent allergic contact dermatitis. What other chemicals are shown on the SDS and could they enhance the potential for a skin reaction?

CLP applies a harmonised classification all suppliers should apply to Benzyl Alcohol:
harmful if swallowed, harmful if inhaled (Acute Tox 4 H302, H332) The actual quantity in a commercial mixture paint stripper may vary by supplier, as will additional substances. You cannot look as one suppliers SDS and assume it will relate to the same or similar product from another
